Gophers and mopeds: Cheaper than a car and maybe more funGMI
Q When did you get your moped? A I got mine two years ago. I got one and [center] Greg Eslinger got one around the same time. A few years ago, maybe one or two guys had them. After we got them, about eight guys got them. Now there's about 30 out there. Q Do you have them for the convenience? A Yeah, there's really not much parking around the U. And, they're kind of fun. Maybe guys can encourage their parents because it's cheaper than a car. For the really nice ones it's like $1,800. Q I've heard funny stories about [Marion] Barber and Laurence Maroney riding on the same moped. I don't imagine you and Eslinger could pile onto one together? A We used to, but we've gotten smarter. That was when we were a little younger. Two years back, we'd double up, even with the big guys. We'd get laughed at a lot riding around campus. But we got smarter. In all honesty, it could be dangerous. It's probably damaging the mopeds putting 600 pounds on there. Q So where do you go, just around campus? A We've definitely had our cruises. Q Like a big moped gang? A Yeah, the most we've had is like four or five guys. We haven't gotten a big ride on this year. But we go down to East River Road, down by the Mississippi. Q How fast can you go? A Thirty [miles per hour] is as fast as you're supposed to go on a moped. Q Do you get some looks around the university -- and do you wear your Gophers stuff while you ride? A I try not to, in order to not make a scene. But I have gotten laughed at by small children pulling up to a stop sign, pointing and laughing. Q Because you're a big guy on a little bike? A Yeah. Q I can't imagine I have much else to ask you about mopeds. Do you have anything else to add? A (Pauses for a moment) Chicks dig mopeds.
