Two plates are issued to passenger cars and light trucks owned by active or retired members of the U.S. Army. A specialty license plate fee of $10 is charged for the first set of specialty license plates. The application and specialty license plate fee is submitted to the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division. The regular registration fee and other applicable fees are submitted to the county tax assessor-collector’s when the plates are approved.

Additional sets may be issued for a fee of $15 in addition to the regular registration and other applicable fees. The application and $15 is submitted to the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division. Of each specialty license plate fee collected, $.50 is sent to the county in which the owner resides. The surviving spouse of a person who would be eligible for U. S. Army specialty license plates is entitled to continue to register one vehicle with the specialty license plate as long as the spouse remains unmarried.

To apply for this specialty plate, use the form VTR-227 (Application for Armed Forces, Coast Guard Auxiliary, or Texas Wing Civil Air Patrol License Plates).

Instructions for Downloading Forms

For PDF Format

For Word Format
1. Click on the .DOT file you wish to download. You will be given the option to save the document to the directory (folder) of your choice. Once you have chosen a directory the file will be download to your computer with an .EXE extension.
2. Open Windows Explorer (File Manager) and double click on the downloaded .EXE file. The .EXE file will be unzipped and appear as a .DOT file in the same folder.
3. You can then open the .DOT file through Windows Explorer or MS Word.

Faxed Copy
To obtain a faxed copy of a form, call toll free 1-888-232-7033 and enter the correct fax form number and a return fax number when prompted.

Any fax form presented for processing must be legible and complete. Original Signatures are required on application forms. The department will not accept an application received by fax.
