Subject: Motor Vehicle Sales Tax for Calendar Year 2004

PURPOSE
To provide information regarding the actual motor vehicle sales tax and penalties collected by your county in calendar year 2004 and the amount of sales tax credit you are entitled to retain during calendar year 2005 under Chapter 152, Tax Code.

DETAILS

  • According to Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts figures, the actual amount of motor vehicle sales tax and penalties your county is entitled to retain during calendar year 2005 is indicated on the attached list under the Sales Tax Credit column.
  • The figures include 5% of your motor vehicle sales tax, plus 5% of the seller financed sales collections on vehicles that were registered in your county.
  • Beginning in 2006, 10% of this sales tax credit will be retained from Fund 001 (General Revenue Fund). The percentage paid out of Fund 001 will increase at a rate of 10% per year with the program being fully funded from the General Revenue Fund after ten years. Counties will not experience a net change in the level of funding.

COUNTY ACTION
The attached report reflects the actual motor vehicle sales tax amount reported through the automated Registration and Title System (RTS) for calendar year 2004. The funds remittance reports will reflect the new County Road and Bridge Fund split levels calculated from these figures.
