These documents contain text of correspondence sent by TxDOT to the county tax assessor-collectors, statutory agents who provide vehicle registration and titling services for citizens in Texas. This information is provided to apprise the general public of issues affecting the state’s vehicle titling and registration process.

Registration and Title Bulletin #044-05

Date: April 25, 2005
To: All County Tax Assessor-Collectors
Category: Registration and Title System
Subject: Registration and Title System Equipment Replacement and Retention

PURPOSE
To promote the RTS equipment retention offer and provide information on equipment replacement issues and switch boxes.

DETAILS
This summer TxDOT will begin replacing RTS monitors and printers. You should have received a letter and form from TxDOT’s General Services Division (GSD) offering you the option to keep the old equipment at no cost. You may continue to use the old equipment for non-RTS functions or other purposes as you deem appropriate. If discrepancies are identified between your equipment inventory and the equipment list provided by GSD, please make the necessary adjustments to the form. The deadline to return the form to GSD is April 30, 2005. If forms are not returned by the designated date, we will assume that you have decided not to keep the equipment.

Counties that use switch boxes to "toggle" between RTS and other systems may need to replace these switch boxes if they were manufactured before January 2003. Generally, switch boxes manufactured before that time will not work with the new monitors. TxDOT recommends the following options:

  • obtain new switch boxes and have them available when we install your new monitors (TxDOT recommends an IOGEAR MiniView Micro 2 port PS/2 KVM, which includes 6 foot cables)
  • wait to confirm current switch box compatibility, but be prepared to buy new units if your old units do not work after the new monitors are installed
  • consult with the manufacturer of your current switch boxes to determine compatibility with flat panel monitors

Per contract requirements, the new monitors and printers will be installed in the same locations as your current equipment. The vendor is not responsible for rerouting cables. For assistance with equipment relocation, please contact the RTS Help Desk.

COUNTY ACTION
Please respond to GSD’s request by April 30, 2005, as indicated above.
