This information is provided to apprise the general public of issues affecting the state’s vehicle titling and registration process.

Registration and Title Bulletin #120-04

Date: November 1, 2004
To: All County Tax Assessor-Collectors
Category: General Information
Subject: Aluminum License Plates
Attachment 1
Attachment 2
Attachment 3

PURPOSE
To inform you of the transition from steel to recycled aluminum license plates.

DETAILS
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is now using recycled aluminum to make specialty license plates. General issue plates will continue to be manufactured from steel until we exhaust the current supply. All license plates will be made from aluminum sometime next year. Although aluminum is expected to be very beneficial for our operations, there is a small possibility that we would switch back to steel in the future should the price of aluminum become excessive.

COUNTY ACTION
Attached is a "shell" news release you may customize and send to local media. We plan to send a similar news release to TxDOT’s district public information offices statewide. This release will be posted electronically on the TxDOT website as an attachment to this bulletin.

CONTACT
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact your local Vehicle Titles and Registration Division Regional Office. You may also call Mike Craig, Deputy Director, or me at (512) 465-7570. Thank you very much.
