Registration and Title Bulletin #106-04

Date: September 27, 2004
To: All County Tax Assessor-Collectors
Category: General Information
Subject: Financial Responsibility Requirements in the United States
Attachment 1

PURPOSE
To revise RTB #134-02, dated December 2, 2002, which provided a chart showing financial responsibility requirements for all jurisdictions of the United States and the District of Columbia.

DETAILS
The attached chart includes an alphabetical listing of each jurisdiction, followed by each jurisdiction’s liability minimums for financial responsibility. The first number is the bodily injury liability amount for one person injured in an accident, the second number is the bodily injury liability amount for all injuries in a single accident, and the third number is the property damage liability amount for a single accident.

The attached spreadsheet shows:

  • Liability minimums (in thousands of dollars)
  • "No-Fault Jurisdictions" (allowing a policy to pay for medical bills for injuries sustained in an accident regardless of who caused the accident)

This data is not maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation. Sources for this financial information and future updates can be found in the
N.A.D.A. Title And Registration Textbook, and an insurance industry website at http://info.insure.com/auto/minimum.html.
