Registration Fee Changes for Passenger Vehicles |
Since the registration fee structure for passenger vehicles is based on year
model, an adjustment must be made each year in the year models assigned to each
fee group. Effective with the registration period that begins on and after
January 1, 2004, the year models in each fee group will be as follows:
1998 and older models $40.80
1999, 2000, and 2001 models $50.80
2002 and newer models $58.80
A new Passenger Fee Schedule cover sheet is attached. The prorated fee chart for
passenger vehicles weighing less than or equal to 6,000 pounds is located on
the back of the attached cover sheet. Please make additional copies as needed.
You should retain some of your current fee schedules for use after December 31,
2003, to calculate credits involving exchanges, low weights, etc., when the
original fee was collected from the current schedule. You should also retain
your current prorated fee chart for passenger vehicles weighing more than 6,000
pounds since a new distribution of those charts will not be made.
As in the past, the year model adjustments will first appear on registration
renewal notices mailed in November for vehicles having December 2003
registration expiration dates because the owners of these vehicles will be
paying registration fees for the period beginning January 1, 2004. If an owner
applies for a renewal of a DEC 03 registration without a renewal notice, the
fee must be computed using the new fee schedule.
New and out-of-state passenger vehicles registered during December 2003 will be
charged fees based on the current fee schedules. Also, during this period, if a
Texas titled vehicle requires the issuance of 13 to 36 months of registration,
the current fee schedule will be used. On or after January 2004, the new fee
schedules will apply to all registrations and renewals. These fees are
registration fees only; they do not include any additional fees (i.e. road and
bridge, child safety, etc.).
If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact your local
Texas Department of Transportation Vehicle Titles and Registration Division
Regional Office. Thank you very much.
